NorthLight assists students at risk of ‘dropping out’ of formal education. Most of its students have failed their PSLE. The school offers education and training in retail operations, engineering and food preparation, with an emphasis on developing self esteem and life-skills.

All funds raised will support NorthLight’s Special Student Assistance Scheme, which helps need students to purchase food and study resources, and Grace Haven children’s shelter.

The PurpleStar project is also enabling NorthLight’s retail operations students to work with professional volunteers to experience the retail process first-hand, and gain valuable experiences as sales assistants at the sale.

Items that will be on sale includes evening gowns, coats and knitwear, business suits, casual wear from designers brands, including CK, DKNY, Ferragamo, Miu Miu and a selection of artwork and handicrafts produced by NorthLight students.

All items have been generously donated by friends of NorthLight School and are in “as new” condition.

The Miss Lim in me got overly emotional as I observed the work and effort this group of very special teachers put in on Friday. It was my first visit to the school and I’m feeling the passion and true wisdom these teachers are imparting to this very special group of students.

It was Northlight School’s 2nd Prize Awards Night. It was a very simple affair, totally unlike those I was part of while in my teaching school. It may be simple, but I felt the appreciation from the students and parents. And the genuine support and love from the teachers was simply amazing! Never felt that strong of feeling through my three years in school. I was so touched that I teared! (Seriously I did!)

Do you remember the weekly flag raising/lowering session where you have to sing the boring, sometimes sounding silly, kind of school song? I remembered I drag those days where we all have to gather in the school hall to sing the school song. I sang a total of 4 school songs before in 4 different schools. Never enjoyed singing or listening to any of them. But this is one of the coolest school song I’ve heard!

Sound a little like a National Day Song ya? The students at Northlight School enjoy singing their school song every Wednesday. And many are proud of it too! To me, I think the school song is the soul to the students, if they’re proud and enjoy it, they’ll feel an even stronger belonging to the school and this surely help lift up their spirit too.
