Review: Sony Xperia Z1 mobile phone

[pullquote type=”2″ align=”right”]Sony Xperia Z1 – the phone with great camera features and you can bring it for a swim![/pullquote]The elegant, 5” Xperia Z1 is an addition to Sony’s premium Z series of product. Xperia Z1 features Sony’s award-winning “G Lens” with a 27mm wide angle and bright F2.0 aperture, custom made large 1/2.3-type CMOS image sensor Exmor RS for mobile with 20.7MP and a BIONZ for mobile image processing engine. The combination of these technologies delivers the same level of quality and performance as a conventional compact digital camera in a slim, waterproof smartphone.

So I took the Sony Xperia Z1 for a test and personally I found the photos taken by the Z1 were slightly more washed out as compared to the photos taken with iPhone 5, Samsung Note 2 and HTC One Max. Among all the phones tested, the iPhone gave the most realistic colors in the photos.

From left to right: iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Sony Xperia Z1 and the HTC One Max

Another feature I love about the Z1 camera is the Timeshift Burst mode. When shutter is pressed and released in this mode, the Xperia Z1 takes 61 images in 2 seconds – from a second before and after pressing the shutter – so you can scroll back and forth to find the perfect image. This is a great feature for taking photos of active kids or babies, jump shots or any fast moving objects you are trying to capture.

The Superior auto mode is very smart too and the camera detects automatically the environment and optimised the setting for the perfect shot. If you are into manual settings, Sony Xperia Z1 also allows you to change manually the EV, white balance (no custom white balance though) and ISO settings.

The Sony Xperia Z1 is made of a solid one-piece aluminium frame with tempered glass on the front and back which provides a consistent viewing experience from any angle. However those with oily fingers will have to clean the screen often as tempered glass is not fingerprint resistant. Guess its also ok to just wash the phone each time you washes your hand too, since it is waterproof!

Next, imagine enjoying your favorite movies on a Sony Bravia TV on the go!

The Xperia Z1 has got the Sony’s BRAVIA TV technology (Triluminos) infused into the display. This creates a wider palette of rich natural colours for an immersive viewing experience. It also includes X-Reality for mobile – Sony’s intelligent super resolution technology which analyses each image and optimises the quality to deliver super sharp videos. Xperia Z1 also brings Sony’s audio expertise to play with Sony’s ClearAudio+ which automatically optimises the audio experience without the need to adjust individual settings. Super cool right? This phone seems ideal for the Kdrama junkies!

Overall I felt that the Sony Xperia Z1 is an ideal phone for the busy parents who take lots of photos of their kids and their day to day experiences and you do not need to worry if the phone accidentally fall into the toilet bowl while watching your drama in the toilet! As I am used to bigger phones, the Xperia Z1 seem a little small for me, comparing to my old Note 2 and my current HTC One Max.
